The Power of You: Who is the expert?
We’ve all heard about the value of multi-sector approaches in achieving better
outcomes in our communities.  But did you know that “everyday” people (that means
you!) are often a critical ingredient in bringing out the best in multi-sector
collaborations?  Your unique knowledge added to that of businesses, government
and organizations amplifies the shared understanding of how the local community
works.

Parents, youth, seniors, and people working to improve their circumstances can
provide a much needed reality check about which community change efforts will best
lead to people’s success.  This fosters more effective use of available expertise and
resources.

Carroll County United will continue to work hard to bring citizens to the table along
with people from organizations, businesses and government for just that reason.
Now that you know how important your knowledge and perspective are, we hope that
you will freely offer your best talents to your community.

Uncharted Waters:
Carroll County’s Unusual Demographic changes
With our abundant natural amenities and long history of tourism, Carroll County has
been a second home and retirement destination for decades.  That trend combined
with the aging of the baby boom bubble will make Carroll County ground zero by
2030 for some highly unusual demographics compared with most other places in
the United States.   We have no prior examples in human history to anticipate how
those changes will shape our community experience and decision making.  We do
know that the wellbeing of all the generations is linked and that we will need to work
together to navigate these uncharted waters.
Some interesting changes from 2000-2010 Census:
•        Added 4152 people to the total population
•        “Lost” 965 young people under age 18
•        Almost doubled the number of people in the 55+ age group (12,862 to 24,271)
•        Carroll County became the “oldest” county in NH with 20.6% of people age 65
and older (NH 13.5%)
Note: The percent of people age 65 and older is projected to more than double by
2030 to 44% compared to 28% for NH.

Learn to lead community conversations
“Leader as Convener: The art of hosting conversations our communities need”
on August 11 at the Kilton Public Library in West Lebanon, NH from 5:00 pm to 7:00
pm. By Carla Kimball (www.riverways.com) and Marty Jacobs (www.systemsinsync.
com) (It is sponsored by Vital Communities  Fee: $20.  (Carroll County United staff
will be attending).
Description: What if the answers to the problems we confront today lie not in
bringing in outside experts to tell us what to do, but lie instead in the wisdom that’s
already there within the community? We believe one way of living and leading in the
world is dying and another is being born. Join us to explore how hosting
conversations can amplify and accelerate the emergence of fundamentally new
solutions in increasingly unpredictable times.
For more details or to register (the deadline is August 8th), email Sharon Miller-
Dombrowski at Vital Communities or call her at 802-291-9100 x113.
